Climate

The South, South-West facing exposure makes Ronco del Gnemiz a particularly hot place, tempered by the sea breezes and sheltered by the Alps to the north. The climate, not always generous, is usually marked by cold winters with little rainfall and warm wet springs. The summers usually enjoy significant day - night temperature differences. From mid-August onwards, Friuli is frequently hit by heavy rainstorms, made tolerable by the "Bora" north winds in Autumn and winter, the "Borina" breezes in late spring and summer which dry an atmosphere which would otherwise be both unlivable and hard to manage in the vineyards.

Soils

Geologically, Ronco del Gnemiz is made up of two distinct soil types:

  • The first is made up of strata of clay and Eocenic marls, locally known as ponca, with low levels of active calcium: this is the prized soil of Friuli. (see photo above)
  • The second is formed of broken down clays and is considered of lesser qualty.

Vineyard management

The estate is managed organically and is registered with the ERSA as n. 23 1C, controlled by the I.C.E.A. SOT Friuli. All the work in the vineyards is carried out with respect for the territory, its preservation and improvement. Certainly, Gnemiz' position means that it requires specific treatments, but the objective is none other than to manage the vineyards with as much common sense as possible.
